LFoP Palestine is able to help schools facilitate the delivery of aspects of Citizenship as specified in the National Curriculum
Extracts from the National Curriculum – Citizenship Key Stages 3 & 4
Playing an active role
Citizenship equips pupils with the knowledge and skills needed for effective and democratic participation. It helps pupils become informed, active citizens who have the confidence and conviction to work together to take action in their communities.
Pupils learn about their rights, responsibilities, duties and freedoms and about laws, justice and democracy. Citizenship encourages respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities. Pupils learn how society has changed and how it continues to change in the UK, Europe and the wider world.
Citizenship helps young people to develop their decision-making and critical skills as they consider a wide range of political, social, ethical and moral problems. They learn to argue a case on behalf of others as well as themselves and speak out on issues of concern.
Citizenship- Key Stage 3. What pupils learn:
• research, analyse and reflect on a wide range of controversial issues
• take part in different kinds of discussions and debates
• participate in different forms of individual and collective action
• work with a range of voluntary and public organisations and the local council
• use different media and ICT to interpret and communicate ideas
• learn techniques to persuade others and represent different points of view.
Citizenship – Key Stage 4 Tackling real issues
Pupils build on KS3. They also consider the challenges facing the global community, including international disagreements and conflict, global inequalities, sustainability and the use of the world’s resources.
How LFoP can help:
1. Provide educational resources
2. Provide speakers
3. Put on Arts and Crafts Exhibitions
4. Run workshops
5. Show documentary videos
6. Give presentations from people who have visited Palestine/Israel
7. Faciliate Question Time events.
Exploring Palestine through Citizenship An online educational resource designed to introduce students to the key issues of the Palestine/Israel question
The pack is sponsored jointly by CAABU and PSC and was written collaboratively by Naira Antoun, the CAABU Education Officer from 2007 to 2009 and PSC member Monica Brady who is a retired teacher.
The lessons are mainly geared towards the Citizenship Curriculum although some are suitable for English and Media lessons and others may be applicable to History and Geography.
They range from the analysis of cartoons, through to lessons on fair trade, the history, problems of daily life for Palestinians and links with supporters in Israel. All lessons are activity based and designed to interest and challenge whilst being accessible to a wide range of abilities. All have excellent visual and written materials to support learning.
Lessons can be easily downloaded from the PSC or CAABU website (see below) and there are many links to other useful websites which can be used by teachers to source additional material or by students to extend knowledge. All lessons are referenced to the National Curriculum and with teaching objectives and detailed lesson plans.

The Exhibition, called ‘Loss of Innocence – Children’s Art from Gaza’
Rod Cox has returned from the Viva Palestina Convoy (organised by George Galloway) having collected quantities of children’s paintings to exhibit here in the UK, mainly to build some person to person links: to try to get British to think of Palestinians as Palestinians and not just the unknown ‘terrorist’ victims of Israel.
If you see the Exhibition, you will be bowled over by the boldness of the art, and the accompanying text allows interpretation without interference.
I have seen the exhibition when on a retreat at Loyala Hall and Rod has also shown the exhibition in Chester and a number of different schools.
Could you please consider having the exhibition at your local school. It will make a valuable contribution to the citizenship curriculum.
